"EASY LIKE 123, ABC!"
Indie Publishing
Shout
out to the Jackson Five because this song was definitely on to something big.
Much like anything in life, there are highs and lows.
One day you’re flying high, and others, not so much.
I could give you a long list of pros and cons and
other comparative scenarios, but I won’t.
Instead, I want to talk to you today about something
that has risen to the top of the ranks despite criticism. Not always
constructive and undoubtedly under-appreciated.
Indie publishing.
Some might say the simplest path may not be the
wisest. Because nothing in life is ever that easy. In most cases, that’s a true
statement and, much like well-defined paths, not always clear of obstacles.
The inconvenient truth is that traditional publishers
don’t like competition in an already saturated market. Filled with millions of
authors who decided to break away from the customary idealism to earn respect
as a writer, you must follow the traditional route.
Hot and bothered that independent publishing has
become like a thorn in their greedy fat paws. Why? Well, they would like to
maintain control over the market and dissuade authors from exploring this
widening path.
Variety is necessary when considering which direction
is the best for one’s career path.
Some have long suggested that independent publishing
is an ill-conceived way to re-establish how writing and publishing are done.
Well, I’m here to tell you that independent publishing
isn’t a fad and has staying power because it allows authors to go outside the
realm of traditional publishing.
In this scenario, Indie publishers maintain control over
their work. They get to call all the shots while following the mainstays of
publishing, but doing it their way.
As writers, we understand the importance of editing,
formatting, marketing, and distribution. This tried, and true formula will
never change no matter how fast the demand and market for less traditional ways
of becoming an author trend.
True to the title, it is as easy as the elemental
process of learning one’s ABC’s and counting. If you can write, you can also
maneuver the mechanics of becoming your publisher too.
It’s not just I who feel this way about Indie
publishing. Many traditionally published well-known authors agree
wholeheartedly with the process of DIY publishing.
So many authors have gone off the grid when they felt
trapped by the process of traditional publishing. There’s nothing wrong with
going this route nor with thinking outside the box and gaining control over
your destination.
Who doesn’t like artistic freedom? Unless they’re too
afraid to undertake the responsibility of becoming a DIVA_ Dedicated,
Independent, Validated, Author.
Indie authors are natural-born trailblazers, leaders
motivated by self-awareness and a sense of artistic direction. Rebels some may
say about them, but no less bosses.
It comes down to this, folks; whoever controls the
wealth has the most say in who gets paid. I don’t know about you, but that
doesn’t work for me. She works hard for the money, and I’ll control my purse
strings, thank you. My choice, well, if you haven’t figured that out by now, is
independence all the way. My input is critical from start to finish, and my
investment equally so.
If you’re still confused about Indie Publishing, well,
pray about it some more. Perhaps the answer will come to you in time, and I
hope you choose independence too.
