“SO YOU WANT TO BE A WRITER”

                                     Understanding The Dynamics of Writing

Many people have said I want to be a writer.  Or, asked the question, what do you have to do to become one?

Well, there are many answers to both aspects of becoming a writer.  One of them is that you must have passion for it.  Secondly, gifted and last of all, commitment.

All three of these elements are essential to your writing career.  There are four main types of writing, expository, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive. Expository – Writing in which author's purpose is to inform or explain the subject to the reader. Persuasive – Writing that states the opinion of the writer and attempts to influence the reader. Descriptive_ Writing which is self explanatory, and lastly, Narrative- Writing, which purpose is to tell the story.

Creative Writing falls under the following categories:

                      .    Poetry.

·         Plays.

·         Movie and television scripts.

·         Fiction (novels, novellas, and short stories)

·         Songs.

·         Speeches.

·         Memoirs.

·         Personal essays.

At least, my breakdown of them.

Before you start to write, there are some things that will prepare you.  Reading is one of them.  You can’t write a book without reading one.  This is necessary for anyone who has dreams of writing in any style.

You should have a general knowledge of how it all works. Yes, some say that you should just do it.  Put pen to paper and let it rip.  Well, I disagree, because the serious writer requires thought.

What will be your genre? How do you develop characters, and which voice will you use for the characters?  Plot lines, historical events, and familiar places.  What period in time are you creating?  Country, state and language spoken.

Will there be diversity within the characters?  How will you keep the story interesting as you move along?

I understand this is a lot of details.  But all necessary for wanna-be- writers embarking on a creative journey.

Personally, I believe memoirs and biographies are probably the easiest style of writing. Mainly because you already have prior knowledge of what the story will contain.  All you need to do at this point is place the details in chronological order as the events occur.  Same thing with biography.

Now, what I won’t tell you is that writing is easy.  Because it’s not.  Some days your creative juices will flow freely.  Then there are others that make you think the source has dried up.

There is a level of technique involved with any scale of writing.  Ask any journalist and they will tell you that a certain skillset is needed to tell a compelling story.  Crucial details, and the ability to capture the pure essence of any event.

So, before you dive in to the writing arena, be aware of everything that’s involved. The best advice about writing, I believe, is that you must have heart for the art. Care about your readers, and the quality of the story.

Overall, if you keep all things discussed today on your list of writing requirements.  I think you will succeed in your dreams.

Happy Writing.
